Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly spoke in Detroit with U.S. Sen. Gary Peters on Monday afternoon.

Kelly was in town to observe northern border operations and meet with Department of Homeland Security Personnel, local immigration stakeholders and Arab-American community members.

He said part of the reason he came to Detroit was because that's the kind of leader he is, someone who gets out and about and kicks the tires a little bit.

"This is a very different border than the other one that I work with, that we work with," Kelly said. He also said that commerce is key for the northern border, especially in Detroit.

He said in January alone, they are seeing a significant reduction in the amount of Central Americans coming into the U.S. through Texas.
