With summer coming, we're telling you how to avoid lawnmower accidents as the warm weather and yard work picks up.

It comes after a 2-year-old boy was critically injured after being struck by a lawnmower in Green Oak Township on Monday afternoon.

ER Dr. Brad Uren at the University of Michigan Hospital says the accidents happen a lot more than people realize.

The American Academy of Pediatrics said more than 17,000 children and teens are treated for lawnmower injuries each year.

Uren says making sure people know how to operate it and know where it's going is key to stopping the injuries.

Another tip he says is to keep your children indoors, never allow them to play on a lawnmower and don't let them ride it with you.

The 2-year-old boy suffered injuries to his lower extremities and is being treated at U of M Mott Children's Hospital, but the hospital is not authorized to give us an update on his condition.
