About 300 people came out to a vigil to honor a 14-year-old girl, hit and killed on her way to school.
14 year-old Victoria Cartwright was walking to school on Friday morning when she was crossing Heydenreich Rd. She was hit by a Jeep Wrangler driven by a fellow student, a 16 year-old girl. Both attended school at Dakota High School in Macomb Township.
Saturday night, about 300 students gathered at the high school for a candlelight vigil in honor of Victoria.
"It's hard right now, a lot of sadness right now, because she was very well liked, for them it's devastating,” said Paul Sibley, the principal at Dakota High School.
He said the large showing of support is typical of this community.
"We're a big school, but we are a very close knit community, we preach it to our staff, we preach it to our students,” said Sibley.
Counselors will continue to be available for students at Dakota on Monday.
Friends of Victoria, or Torey as she was called, said it’s hard to believe she’s gone.
Aaron Barbera said he hung out with Torey every day and she always made people around her happy.
"I guess this all really goes to show that you just have to love people while they're there with you, not to wait for something like this to happen to put a candle down for them,” said Barbera.
The accident is still under investigation by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
