It's never too late to start exercising!

Physical activity is important for people of all ages, including older adults but many of them avoid it.

Why is it important for older adults to exercise?
If you’re an older adult, then you need to know being physically active can help you maintain your independence.  You’ll have less physical disability and take fewer medications. Unfortunately, research shows the older we get, the less we exercise.  But it’s never too late to start so be your own health hero and take control. Whether you’re 50 or 70 years old, you can still reap benefits by changing your couch potato lifestyle to a healthier active one.

Do older people need to worry about hurting themselves?
You may face physical challenges simply because your body is aging.  Your risk of injury like a rotator cuff tear does increase but despite this, you’re better off exercising than not.  Because exercise’s powerful effect leads to what’s called “compression of morbidity”. That means you stay healthier longer in your late years instead of spending your last 5 -10 years battling chronic illness.

What are your prescriptions?
Age shouldn’t stop anyone from exercising:

1. If you’ve been sedentary or have health conditions, discuss exercising with your Doctor first.
2. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week – brisk walking is great.
3. If you can’t do 30 minutes, do what you can based on your ability - any physical activity will provide health benefits.
4. Every 6 months replace your running shoes - the compression on the bottom breaks down and increases your chance of an injury.

Should we warm up before exercising?
It’s important to warm up and cool down before and after physical activity. This helps your body transition into or out of exercise more easily.  And be sure to stretch gently as this increases flexibility. Please don’t bounce while stretching - your risk of tearing muscle tissue increases.
