DETROIT — A vacant building owned by the Ilitch family caught fire Monday evening.

The building, which is located in Midtown Detroit, is the former Gold Dollar bar, according to the Wayne County Register of Deed.

Smoke was seen pouring into the sky just after 8 p.m. Monday.

A spokesman for Olympia Development, which is a division of Ilitch Holdings, Inc., responded to the fire with the below statement:

We are aware of the fire at the Gold Dollar building. We will cooperatively work with the Detroit Fire Department to determine cause. Safety and controlling the fire is the top priority tonight.

Fire crews were not hurt while putting out the flames. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
