(WXYZ) — Kmart used to be a go-to store for shoppers – now some of the last of the stores are closing here in the metro Detroit area.

It was just announced the Kmart in Waterford will be closing its doors. This is on top of the already planned Kmart closure in Warren.

The Warren location at 10 Mile and Dequindre is slated to close in December or January. The Waterford Kmart on Dixie highway and Lake Point Drive is now scheduled to close in February.

It was announced that 96 additional Kmart and Sears stores will be closing nationwide.

The closures will leave the company with 182 Kmart and Sears stores across the country.

Kmart has close ties here to metro Detroit. Once headquartered in Troy— at it’s peak Kmart employed 5,000 people.

The first Kmart opened in Garden City in 1962— that location closed in 2017.

At one point Kmart had 134 locations in Michigan.

Following the closures in Warren and Waterford, there will only be one Kmart store in Michigan, located in Marshal.
