Warming centers opening across metro Detroit following ice storm

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) — With hundreds of thousands of DTE Energy customers without power, many communities have opened warming centers to provide a safe, warm place for those experiencing outages.

Here is a list of warming centers available throughout metro Detroit:

Birmingham
The City of Birmingham is opening the Baldwin Public Library as a temporary overnight warming station for Birmingham residents.

The warming center will be available in the lower level of the Baldwin Library from Friday, February 24 at 9:00 pm to Saturday, February 25 at 9:30 am, and from Saturday, February 25 at 9:00 pm to Sunday, February 26 at noon.

Dearborn Heights
The warming shelter is being held at the Canfield Community Center located at 1801 North Beech Daly on the grounds of the Dearborn Heights Fire Department Headquarters.

This shelter will open at 8 p.m. Thursday and will remain open as long as required.

Detroit

24 Hour Warming Center:
Farwell Recreation Center, 2711 E. Outer Drive, open now through Monday, Feb. 27 at 8 a.m.

Overnight Warming Centers
Individuals, families and youth seeking shelter or warming center placements can call (313) 305-0311 from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesdays for assistance.

Veterans seeking shelter should go to the Dingell VA Hospital, 4646 John R St., Red Tower 2nd Floor, from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays or 11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Outside of these hours of operation, or on holidays, those seeking shelter should come in person to one of the following three warming center locations:

The Jack Kirksey Livonia Community Recreation Center is open for Livonia residents who confirm they live in the city.

The center has cots, showers and other facilities that can provide short-term refuge for those who may need it. There is also access to WiFi and plugs for charging devices.

The hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays; 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

If you are in need of emergency shelter or overnight accommodations, call (734) 466-2900 at least two hours before closing.

All recreation areas in the facility will be off-limits for emergency shelter users, including the pools, gymnasiums, climbing wall and fitness hub.

Pontiac
The Bowen Center is located at 52 Bagely Street in Pontiac.

Royal Oak
The warming center is open at the Jack and Patti Salter Community Center located at the 1545 E. Lincoln in Royal Oak.

The current hours for the warming center will be as follows:

  • Thursday, Feb. 23 1 p.m.-1 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 24 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 25: 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Troy
The Troy Community Center

Washtenaw County 
Along with the American Red Cross, Washtenaw County will open an overnight warming center beginning Thursday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m.

The center will operate out of the Eagle Crest Conference Center located at 1275 S. Huron St. in Ypsilanti Township.

The center will be open until 8 a.m. for anyone in need of a warm, safe place for the night.

In Ann Arbor, the following centers will be open:

  • Veterans Memorial Park (2150 Jackson Ave.) is open until 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.
  • All Ann Arbor District Library locations are open until 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.
  • Northside Community Center (809 Taylor St.) is open 24 hours immediately through Sunday, Feb. 25, at noon.
  • ​Lord of Light Lutheran Church (located at 801 S. Forest Ave.) is open 24 hours immediately through Sunday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m.​

In addition to the temporary warming centers sites, several other daytime winter havens and overnight centers are available throughout the County:

  • Delonis Center (312 W. Huron St.) – beginning at 7pm nightly, open through March 31,2023 (City of Ann Arbor)
