LISTEN as Grosse Pointe Woods rape victim forgives attacker

Posted

A courageous witness statement given by a woman raped at gunpoint inside of her Grosse Pointe Woods home last April stunned a courtroom Friday.

“I can honestly say I forgive you Gerald Day,” said the rape victim.

Day, 28, was sentenced Friday to 50-75 years in connection with each of the two rape counts and 20-40 years for home invasion. He was also sentenced on various other charges related to the attack.

In July, a 12-member jury found Day of Detroit guilty of first-degree home invasion, two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, one count of criminal sexual conduct in the second degree, assault with intent to rob while armed, felon in possession of a firearm, and weapons felony firearm.

Day was arrested last April after a manhunt in several morning home invasions, where he also attempted to rape a 12-year-old girl, but she managed to escape.

During one of the home invasions, he raped a 37-year-old woman at gunpoint in her kitchen with her child in a nearby room.

“You do not win. You do not win. I am already becoming stronger,” she said Friday.
