The Freep Film Festival is still months away, but you don't have to wait until then to see great films.
The organizers are hosting a monthly screening program that allows people to catch some of the documentaries early and even meet the people who created them.
"A huge component of the Freep Film Festival are these community engagement panel discussions that happen after the film," said Freep Film Festival Artistic Director Kathy Kieliszewski. "There are a lot of films that don’t happen during the time frame that the Freep Film Festival is going on, there on a different kind of cycle. "Little Gandhi" is one of those films, so we’re taking advantage of films that are playing throughout the year to actually bring that community discussion to those films."
"Little Gandhi" is set to have its Michigan premiere at the DIA this Thursday, September 29. The film tells the story of iconic Syrian peace activist Ghiyath Matar nicknamed 'Little Gandhi.'
"It's definitely a personal story, I was born and raised in Syria," said "Little Gandhi" Director Sam Kadi. "When the crisis started, I felt -- definitely -- I needed to do something, I need to tell a different perspective, I need to show a fresh perspective and I wanted to focus on the young Syrians, the young educated Syrians…they just asked for dignity and freedom."
The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in the DIA's Detroit Film Theatre. Tickets are available here.
