(WXYZ) — Michigan residents are now required to wear masks in public places such as grocery stores and while using public transportation under Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s revised stay-at-home order.

Thankfully, Fabric Masks are getting much easier to find.

Master Drapery In Troy has had a slow month when it comes to selling drapes, yet sewers and seamstresses are still hard at work thanks to owner Rose-Anne Franchina-Cross.

“I just had that thought, if I could make anti-microbial face masks this would be great,” she said.

In the past three weeks she’s made 4,000 face masks.

“100 percent organic cotton with anti-microbial and silver in it,” Franchina-Cross said. “They are 12 dollars each and hand washable and air dry.”

You can call her to purchase masks at 248-307-1090. Making face masks is now an essential part of her business

“Yes it is, and I have a lot of seamstresses that are single moms,” Franchina-Cross said. And she’s been able to keep people employees and she’s even hiring more sewers.

The demand for masks is increasing, now that Michigan residents are required under the executive order to wear masks in public spaces such as on the bus, in grocery stores and at doctor’s offices.

Employers must also provide non-medical grade masks to their in-person employees.

Big Box stores like Targethave begun selling fabric masks at some stores and online. But not all masks are created equal.

Target is selling a 10 pack for 15 dollars, which is a great price! They are made of Canvas and single ply.

Here are the CDC face mask recommendations:

  • Multiple Layers of Fabric
  • Snug Fit along the side of your face
  • Secured with a bad or loops around your ears
  • Breathable
  • Maintain Shape After Washing
  • Wash Mask Daily

Franchina-Cross says her masks go above and beyond the CDC recommendations. They have the moldable metal above the nose.

“It doesn’t need a filter because of the anti-microbial properties," she said. "It is quilted. It's very comfortable. It’s very soft on the skin.”

She adds that they are very breathable and both kids and adults can wear them.
