EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WXYZ) — One of the biggest issues of dog rescue is getting the animals much-need veterinary care as soon as possible.

The pandemic proved to be challenging for one rescue organization, as some vet hospitals were not as accessible due to pandemic restrictions.

“Our goal has always been to help as many animals as we can,” said Theresa Sumpter, who has been rescuing dogs with the Detroit Pit Crew for seven years.

This year - they have a new project to look forward to a low-cost veterinary hospital in Eastpointe. The building located on Kelly Road near Vernier will be the first stop for the dogs in need.

“Lots of times they are injured, they are sick." she said. "They need extensive medical care.”

Theresa just rescued a mom and eight of her puppies living in a ripped up couch on the street.

“Had lots of worms, lots and lots of puppy worms. They got dewormed. They had their first round of shots," Sumpter said.

During the shutdown, Detroit pit Crew would continue to rescue dogs but vet care wasn’t as easy to access.

“We really had a hard time getting into veterinary hospitals during the pandemic,” Sumpter said.

The former medical building has 6,000 square feet with 12 exam rooms.

Sumpter says the vet hospital is a nonprofit and will be operating 24-7.

With costs being low, pet owners facing financial hardships can bring their animals in. It’s a win-win.

“There are some people who are low-income, senior citizens, people who are on disability that just need a little extra help. So, we really want them to come and see us. We want them to bring their animals to us.”
