(WXYZ) — The Macomb County Sheriff's Office says it has taken multiple reports of a phone scam.
Citizens have reported being contacted via phone by a person saying they work for the sheriff's office. The caller tells the citizen they are in some type of trouble and need to provide cash or gift cards to avoid arrest or further prosecution.
The caller then requests the citizen meet up with them to turn over the cash or to provide the gift card codes over the phone.
Deputies say the caller was able to "ghost" the sheriff's office phone number, meaning that the phone number displayed as the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office says that if you ever need to post a bond for a warrant issued, you will be required to come into the sheriff's office or a courthouse. The sheriff's office will not call you and ask for money or gift cards in lieu of your arrest.
