Man faces multiple charges after 2018 standoff with Romulus police

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — Several charges have been announced against Chad Smith, 33, following an attempted carjacking, shoot out with Romulus police, hostage situation and standoff back in August 2018.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the charges on March 10. Smith's list of charges include assault with intent to murder, kidnapping, carjacking, first-degree home invasion, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felon in possession of a firearm, killing/torturing animals, assaulting/resisting/obstructing the police, and felony firearm.

On Aug. 3, 2018 around 5:23 p.m., authorities were called on a report of an injured man inside a home in the 345400 block of Wick Road in Romulus. When troopers with the Michigan State Police and officers with the Romulus Police Department arrived, there was a standoff with the suspect that ended when the suspect surrendered.

Earlier the same day, police say Smith attempted a carjacking near Lisa Street. When that wasn't successful, he jumped a backyard fence where he encountered a dog and shot it Smith is accused of then having a shoot out with Romulus police before entering a home where he took a 7-year-old boy hostage. Smith was injured in the shoot out, police say.

The hostage situation lasted several hours before Smith surrendered to police.

Smith was arraigned March 11 in 34th District Court in Romulus. He remains in custody and been referred for a competency evaluation.
