It’s cold, brutally cold for those stuck outside.
But there's one man who won’t leave his Salvation Army bell ringer’s post because he knows all too well how helpful that money is.
At one point in his life, Michael Evans found himself on the street. After suffering a stroke, getting divorced and losing his job, Michael had nowhere to turn.
That is until he found the Salvation Army.
"They said if I needed to make some money I could ring the bell for them,” said Evans.
So he started ringing the bell at a Kroger in Brighton. Before long, he was a fixture at the grocery store.
The bell ringing gig inevitably led him to a full-time job at Kroger.
"They called ‘em here at Kroger’s and they said — they know exactly who I am. They said they’d try me out for two weeks, and they said: 'oh, we’re not going to let him go!' As of March it will be 6 years," he said.
Six years on the job, six years of ringing that bell and six years of his cheerful smile greeting customers.
