The Bay County Sheriff's Office says a couple was arrested after shoplifting jewelry and sex toys at the Bay City Mall on New Year's Eve.

Deputies say the 20-year-old woman and her now fiance, William J. Cornelius, got engaged at the local Walmart before heading to the mall.

Around 6 p.m., a shoplifting complaint was called in to authorities from someone inside the Bay City Mall's Spencer's Gifts store regarding the couple.

Cornelius and his fiancee were located a short time later by sheriff's deputies.

Deputies confirm to 7 Action News that they found more than $80 worth of items on Cornelius, including a watch, edible thong, sex toy and sexually themed candy. They also found some jewelry on the 20-year-old woman - his new fiancee.

Cornelius admitted to deputies that he stole items for his fiancee. His pretrial hearing is set for January 29.

The 20-year-old woman has yet to be arraigned on charges.
