(WXYZ) — The man who hit and killed a Wayne County sergeant was sentenced to a minimum of four and a half years in prison for a hit-and-run accident that killed Wayne County Sergeant Lee Smith.

Desmond Robinson pleaded guilty to the hit-and-run accident that ended the life of Sergeant Lee Smith and was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Smith was jogging in Hines Park in Westland last year when he was hit by Robinson. He was a 26-year veteran of the force.

Westland police said Robinson panicked after hitting Smith, drove home to Inkster, bought auto parts and started to repair the front of the car.

He was then charged with reckless driving, failure to stop at an injury accident scene and tampering with evidence.

The sentencing had emotional testimony from Smith's wife and his brother.
