REDFORD, Mich. (WXYZ) — Redford police say a mother and her boyfriend are in custody after a 5-year-old girl was found unresponsive inside a motel on Tuesday evening.

Redford police were called to the Inn America Tuesday morning for reports of a child not breathing. They transported her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

According to the medical examiner, the 5-year-old's death is being ruled as ah homicide, and preliminary results show she died from blunt force trauma.

An adult was in the room with the child according to police, but their relationship isn't known.

Action News spoke to a woman staying in a motel room nearby. She said the fire trucks and police cars woke her up Tuesday.

"My room is all the way in the front. They’re all the way in the back. That why I ain’t know there was nothing going on until I got up and seen some of my neighbors and they explained to me what was going on," she said.

The little girl was staying at the motel with her mom and brother according to the motel's owner. He wasn't able to say for exactly how long.

Redford police said the prosecutor's office is aware of this investigation.

Capt. Al DiPrima told Action News all people related to the case have been interviewed and accounted for.
