The Allen Fire Department is investigating a massive sewage spill that traffic backed up for miles on Southfield freeway Wednesday.

Officials say they responded to a 5 a.m. call Wednesday morning about a car that spun out in the northbound lanes of Southfield Road near M-39. The driver was not injured, police say.

At the scene, the department says it found about 5,000 pounds worth of waste on the road.

The spill forced crews to shutdown two northbound lanes during rush hour traffic.

Clean-up efforts could cause cost thousands of dollars, officials say.

Investigators are still searching for who caused the mess.
