DETROIT (WXYZ) — Construction season is quiet right now, but once the weather warms up, drivers can expect to see plenty of orange cones around metro Detroit.

One of the biggest projects slated for 2021 will be the reconstruction of the 50-year of Telegraph and 8 Mile interchange. There are plans to make the interchange into a safer diverging diamond.

There are also plans for reconstruction of Telegraph from Grand River Avenue to just north of 8 Mile Road.

“We are going to pull everything out, go down to the sand, and rebuild Telegraph from Grand River to 8 Mile,” said Diane Cross with the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Cross says Telegraph will have two lanes open at all times during the construction period, however the construction will close down ramps.

Another big project happening in 2021 will take on I-275 from the Monroe County border to 6 Mile.

“Some of that is just maintenance work, but from Eureka to 5 Mile we are going to be reconstruction 275, and also we plan to do it were we can leave two lanes open, but it is going to be a major project,” said Cross.

Other projects planned for 2021 include:

  • I-696 between I-275 to Orchard Lake
  • I-96 from I-275 to Kent Lake
  • Gratiot from 11 Mile to 14 Mile
  • M-59 from Romeo Plank to I-94

MDOT is still very early into the planning processes, so still no word yet on lane closures and timing for all these projects. However when we do get information on construction plans, you can be sure we will let you know.
