MELVINDALE, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged a Melvindale police sergeant with misdemeanor assault & battery and willful neglect of duty after an incident involving a drunk man back in February.

According to the prosecutor's office, 34-year-old Matthew Furman and another Melvindale police officer were dispatched to a home on Feb. 1 after a call of a drunk and disorderly person.

When they arrived, Furman found the intoxicated man, and it's alleged that while trying to escort the victim down the stairs to recover, Furman had contact with the victim and caused him to fall. It is alleged that he willfully neglected his duty while handling the intoxicated man. The man was taken to the hospital by EMS.

Furman pleaded no contest to the charge of willful neglect of duty and given one year probation, with the condition that he attend anger management classes, with restitution, fines and costs to be determined by the court.

The assault and battery charge will be dismissed at the sentencing hearing.
