Metro Detroit beauty business shuts down with no warning to customers

NOVI, Mich. (WXYZ) — A popular beauty business is shutting its doors and hanging some of its paying customers out to dry. LightRx is known for its state of the art laser hair removal and body sculpting treatments. However, now, it's also known by many as being unprofessional.

Sonia Pruitt of Sterling Heights did not need more than a few words to describe her feelings about LightRx because they left her in the dark.

"The fact that you closed several locations, and without warning," Pruitt said. "You guys should not be running a business."

Pruitt said that the business does not stand by its word.

"Do not go to LightRx because they do not stand by their product and they do not keep their word."

Pruitt wanted some laser hair removal to top things off a but, so LightRx, the Shelby Township location, is where she went. It's a place that specializes in facial and body treatments, however, Pruitt did not feel so special after the first few rounds.

"I just woke up and I had black, blotches on my face," she said. "My lips turned black completely."

Even after following their every instruction, Pruitt says, and $850 bucks later, when she went back, they were suddenly, and without notice, closed.

"(I) left over 30 messages and no response," Pruitt said.

She sent emails and called other locations as well. Now, all she wants is her money back.

"How about my money back because you guys have been treating me for something I'm not a candidate for," Pruitt said.

She said she found out after the fact that the wrong treatment was performed on her. LightRx should have done a skin test first, she said, but that didn't happen. Pruitt, who is a mom, is beyond upset, so she reached out to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Attorney General.

"The AG's office sent me a letter, and told me six other people are in the same predicament that I'm in," she said.

Laura Blankship, with the BBB, contacted the owners of LightRx, hoping to shed some light on this shady situation.

"During that conversation, we learned that they were having some cashflow issues," Blankship said. "We started receiving an influx of complaints from consumers."

Those customers were either unsatisfied with the service, or paid and didn't get service at all.

"They have closed a third of their locations across the country," Blankship said. "They said that it's possible that they'd be closing more."

And when it comes to the refunds? Those checks are actually bouncing. Overall, the BBB means business, and trust, as far as how LightRx is handling its issues, people say they are unorganized and not very professional.
