The Sterling Heights Fire Department is being credited with saving a dog and turtle while fighting a fire at a home in the 5000 block of Northlawn Monday.

According to a Sterling Heights City Hall Facebook post, the firefighters were called to the house around 1 p.m.

While crews didn't find anyone home, they did reportedly come across the family's frightened dog who tried to get away from firefighters as the house filled with smoke, the post read.

Firefighters managed to get the dog to safety, and later removed the family's turtle.
