The Dearborn Heights Fire Department is adding a temporary position for a furry friend.

For the first time, firefighters there are fostering a puppy from the Michigan Humane Society. 6-month-old Bluebell is digging the rigs at her new digs!

Shaun Bailey of the Michigan Humane Society said, “The cliche is for a fire department to have a Dalmatian.”

This blue heeler puppy was in need of a hero.

“I can’t imagine a better environment for a pet that’s in need of care.”

Bluebell is going to have surgery to correct a birth defect in her leg. She needed a safe, comfortable place to recover and get a lot of affection and attention.

Dearborn Heights Fire Chief Dave Brogan explained,“Such a sweet dog and the guys, you can see, are already in love with her.”

The puppy will hardly be alone. The station has firefighters here around the clock. Whenever an alert goes out, they’re training Bluebell to go to her crate until they return.

Brogan said, “Put her up where she is safe and she can’t get into any trouble while we are gone.”

The fire department will use this as an opportunity for community engagement! They’ll be giving updates and posting pictures of Bluebell on social media.

The chief added, “She’s going to be the new rockstar for sure.” Bluebell’s presence is something these firefighters need.

“Especially if you go on a bad call, it’s nice to come back and have a big happy dog greeting you and wagging their tail,” Brogan said.

After Bluebell recovers from her surgery, she will be up for adoption.

Bailey added, “Whether or not someone here adopts her or somebody adopts her at the shelter, I think it’s going to be a big success at the end.”
