(WXYZ) — The freezing temperatures are a matter of life and death for families living on the streets or without heat. As a result, shelters that had waiting lists before the extreme cold hit are taking emergency action.

At Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, 7 Action News Reporter spoke to Devin Neves, who lives in a Pontiac home with no heat, along with her children. One of them, Katelyn, was born on Dec. 14.

She said their dad works a seasonal job and she couldn't afford to pay her utility bills.

"It's hard knowing I had my children in there and had to make a choice for my needs, for their needs," she said.

Family members are helping her care for her older children. She took her youngest to the Grace Centers of Hope. it's helping her find resources and make a plan so she can provide for them in the future.

Pastor Kent Clark says before this severe weather there was already a waiting list for services. He says Grace Centers of Hope will provide emergency shelter. But its goal is to do more— to help people overcome addictions, make a living, and have their own homes.
