(WXYZ) — During the holidays, many of us are spending time with family. But our troops overseas don't have that luxury. That's why a local teen is continuing her mission to send them a piece of home.

Elizabeth Popovich was just 8 when she decided to collect donations to send Girl Scout cookies to our troops overseas. She's now a junior at Dakota High Scholl and in her 10th year of a sweet mission called Cookies 4 Our Ttroops.

Popovich started with flyers and reached out to businesses for help too.

"I noticed that when people really didn't want to buy girl scout cookies, I'd ask 'would you like to send some to our military,'" she said. "I noticed that people really liked the idea and it just took off from there."

Since the teen started, she's raised more than $169,000.

Popovich is now getting reading for another big donation event with the great support of Emagine Theater owner Paul Glantz. The donation event Friday, 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 10 p.m. at Emagine Macomb.

She says it fills her heart with joy knowing the difference she's making.
