(WXYZ) — The Novi man accused of being a spy will turn 50 in a Russian prison today.

Paul Whelan has been locked up overseas for 14 months. He maintains he was in Russia for a friend's wedding and believes he was set up.

If convicted, he could spend up to 20 years behind bars.

Representatives of the United Kingdom Embassy in Moscow visited Whelan last week, bringing him a food care package and 78-letters from family members and friends.

The defense team has asked for the charges to be dismissed and lawyers could get an answer this week.
