(WXYZ) — Despite fewer people being on the roads due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan roads are more deadly this year than last.

According to the latest statistics from Michigan State Police, there have been 730 deaths on Michigan roads as of the week ending Sept. 21. That is up 58 deaths from this same time last year, according to MSP.

The state also said there have been 3,597 serious injuries this year, 348 fewer than this time last year.

Police are also reminding drivers that Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week continues through Sept. 26, dedicated to all things related to child passenger safety.

These are ways that parents, technicians and caregivers can take part in the safety week.

  • Attend a virtual seat check—this is a great alternative to a face-to-face inspection and can still help caregivers ensure they are staying current with all safety recommendations.
  • Talk about CPS Awareness week on social media—highlight CPS on your social media accounts and spread the word! You might very well save the life of a child.
  • Donate a car seat-- Before parents can even bring their newest bundle of joy home from the hospital, they need to have a car seat ready to go. Consider donating a new one to a local charity in order to help families in need or point them in the direction of a certified CPS car seat technician to obtain one.
