(WXYZ) — Michigan State Police officials are applauding a Canton family after they discovered what looked to be possible explosives in a box of military souvenirs.
MSP tweeted on Friday that the family saw the box and called Canton police to assess the items. Police then called the bomb squad to investigate out of precaution. Police say the souvenirs were determined to be inert but that the family did the right thing.
"If you come across something that you feel may be explosive, the first thing you should do is STOP!" MSP tweeted.
Police say anyone who comes across old military souvenirs when cleaning out houses should be vigilant if something looks suspicious. They advise the community to call 911 and not try to take the box somewhere.
"Don't take any chances! Just leave them alone and call 911."
Something we haven’t mentioned in awhile. Many families have to clean out the homes of family that have passed and may have military souvenirs packed away from their service. Often families will grab the items drive down to the police station or state police post and slide them across the desk. Many times these items are actually live and very unstable. Don’t take any chances! Just leave them alone and call 911. They will take it from there.
