Michigan State Police: You can still go to jail if legally carrying marijuana

(WXYZ) - The legalization of recreational marijuana has police across the state pledging to keep an eye out for anyone abusing the rules.

Police say it is still possible to go to jail if you are legally carrying marijuana.

Michigan State Police says don't get behind the wheel if you are under the influence – police will use field sobriety tests and blood tests to ensure drivers are being responsible.

The law states that you cannot sell pot; only gifts are permitted and you must be 21 years old with only up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana on you.

Additionally, you can grow up to 12 plants in your house, but it's not allowed on school grounds and you cannot smoke in public.

Rules in other states like Colorado do not apply here in Michigan.

MSP says they are ready to enforce.

"Weed and getting behind the wheel doesn't mix," said Lieutenant Mike Shaw with MSP. "Our philosophy doesn't change at all when it comes to impaired driving."
