Michigan State University is launching a pilot program next month aimed at providing safe rides home for students.
The program, called Safe Ride Initiative, begins April 2.
It allows students to schedule a ride home using an app that contacts a transportation service.
During the test phase, the service will be available Sunday through Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Students can only schedule rides to locations on or near campus and the destination must be a residence.
The university hopes the program will keep students from walking alone late at night, reduce the risk of assaults on campus and prevent drinking and driving.
