Microsoft working on "holoportation" technology

We might not be able to teleport just yet, but we can holoport!

Microsoft Research is working on what they are calling "holoportation." It's like teleportation, but it's your virtual self that does the traveling.

Holoportation uses a type of 3D capture technology to transmit a model of you to anywhere around the world in real time.

Using a mixed reality device like the Hololens, Microsoft notes people can see and hear remote subjects as if they were in the same space.

One of the company’s research teams recently released a video demonstrating the technology.

Giving high fives might be a little rough, but overall, there can be many applications to this virtual teleportation.

One of the examples Microsoft partner research manager Sharam Izadi gives in the video is using holoportation to reconnect with family members who may live far away.

The setup is a little intensive. The team had a room full of 3D cameras to capture the subjects at various angles and a couple of HoloLens goggles so people could actually see the remote subjects.
