(WXYZ) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a lot of you have a story, a journey, be it your own or someone you know or love that has won or lost their battle with this disease.

I sat down with a Detroit radio host to talk about her fight to survive.

Cheron Sanders is a radio dynamo. She is the Program Director and the famous, unforgettable voice you hear middays on Mix 92.3.

Cheron is a powerful and positive presence in our community. When she talks, people listen.

I asked Cheron, who is also my dear friend, if she would tell her truth. Cheron was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40.

She is a living testimony, that early detection is key. That is why this Saturday, October 19th, is so near and dear to her heart. It’s the 20th Annual Sista Strut in Grand Circus Park.

African-American women are 41 percent more likely to die from breast cancer. So let’s make a change, raise awareness and make a difference. Let’s get people screened. Let’s help the under insured and the uninsured.

You can still get involved with the Sista Strut! Donate by texting “STRUT19” to 52182.
