DETROIT (WXYZ) — A student and mother were arrested after another student was stabbed at Gompers Elementary-Middle School in Detroit on Wednesday, the district said.

An eighth-grade student stabbed another eighth-grade student, according to Detroit Public Schools Community District. The district said a student’s mother gave her child a small knife inside the school.

When the parent entered the school, a metal detector sounded, but she was not searched by the security guard, the district said.

“The security guard has been removed from the school pending an investigation that could lead to termination,” part of a statement said from DPSCD.

The student and mother accused in the stabbing were arrested.

School will be closed Thursday as the district makes sure safety protocols are in place.

“A Gompers family meeting will be held tomorrow to address this matter. At this time, we are unaware of any additional threats targeting students,” the district said.

Parents say they're concerned with a lack of transparency from the school as they weren't notified until after school around 4 p.m.

“When they found out something’s wrong, instead of them saying OK, this happened, let me get this notice out to the parents, they wait until the end of the day to address it,” parent Ateshia Vincent said.

Vincent's son is in first grade at the school. She says she wishes the administration would have contacted her sooner.

“It’s unacceptable because had I known that, I could’ve went and got my kid,” she said.

Vincent wasn't aware of the incident until speaking with 7 News Detroit.

“Honestly, I’m a little upset and I’m worried for my son because I don’t understand how a parent could give it to their child, and then they go off through the metal detector. First of all, parents aren’t even allowed in the school,” Vincent said.

Detroit public schools said the victim is expected to be OK.

Vincent said this isn't the first time parents have felt left in the dark after a serious situation.

“When he was in kindergarten, they had locked down the school, didn’t say anything. We’re going to pick our kids up, another parents like oh, we have to go to the front because they locked down the school,” Vincent said.

Vincent and other parents we spoke with said they like Gompers and the staff but now, they have serious concerns with safety.

“The security for that school needs to be better because we’re having too many incidents where things are happening,” Vincent said.

Detroit public schools police are investigating.

It’s unknown at this time when arraignments will take place. Additional details about the incident have not yet been released.
