The Monroe County Sheriff is warning residents of a telephone scam involving the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry program.
The office has received numerous complaints of residents receiving phone calls from people portraying themselves as detectives or sergeants with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Officials say the purpose of the call is to elicit citizens to provide money, either over the phone via credit card or by mailing checks/gift cards to an address outside of Monroe County.
The callers are reportedly very persistent and often use the threat of arrest and long prison terms to entice compliance.
Sheriff Dale Malone reminds residents that no law enforcement agency will call citizens and demand money or face arrest for any reason. If a Monroe County resident encounters this situation, they are asked to call Monroe County Central Dispatch at 734-243-7070.
Those living outside of Monroe County can contact their local police department or sheriff's office.
