SAGINAW, Mich. (WXYZ) — A Tri-City MSP trooper had to administer NARCAN to himself after coming in contact with an unknown powder substance during a traffic stop on Sunday.
According to MSP West Branch Sgt. John Richards, the trooper, who is not being identified, began feeling symptoms of a possible drug overdose after doing a routine traffic stop on northbound I-675 near Tittabawassee Road in Saginaw.
The driver of the stopped vehicle had a suspended license and was in possession of narcotics, however, those narcotics are separate from whatever the officer came in contact with, Richards said.
The officer began feeling the effects of an overdose and began giving himself a dose of NARCAN. Two other troopers, who were first on the scene, gave the officer another dose of NARCAN before the ambulance arrived.
"Every officer is trained on Narcan and how to administer," Richards said.
The trooper was then taken to St. Mary's Hospital and later released.
Officers are still investigating the incident to determine what the powder substance was.
