ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) — Imagine going to school and learning about history, then watching the headlines about the new Coronavirus.

“I am a little worried because it is spreading around and I am afraid it is going to have the same effect as the plague,” said Moses Harrick, an eighth grader from Royal Oak.

Hearing about a virus that is new, not well understood, is claiming lives, and now is in the United States is something to be concerned about. For some children it is extra stressful. So what can you do to ease your child’s anxiety?

The Director and Health Officer of the Macomb County Health Department Bill Ridella says use it as a teaching moment empowering them with knowledge of the things they can do to prevent illness.

“It is a great time to educate them on those preventative measures, on how to wash your hands properly, for 20 seconds with soap and water, how to sneeze into your elbow or sleeve and if you are sick to talk about it with your parents,” said Ridella.

Knowing some actions to take proactively, can help ease your child's stress.
