They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, but in this case, it was a thousand words of controversy.
A heart-wrenching photo posted on Facebook earlier this month shows a dog sleeping on a sidewalk, clenching a teddy bear with all his might.
The image, first posted on a personal page of a Houston rescue group volunteer, quickly went viral and sparked a major question: Why wasn’t more done?
Plenty of people subsequently left comments, asking why the group didn’t rescue the dog.
The rescue group, called Forgotten Dogs of the 5th Ward Project, followed up on the controversy with a post of its own.
“This dog is in relatively good condition and sadly, when people see a dog in this shape they are less likely to step up to foster,” it explained. “So what we do is mostly post the dogs that are in worse shape and need immediate medical attention.”
Leaving the dog behind was hard, the group said, asking for the public not to judge. It also explained that further investigation found the dog belonged to an 89-year-old man who takes in many dogs in the area.
