New Balance shows off 3D printed midsole

Posted

New Balance recently announced the company will start selling a pair of shoes with 3D printed midsoles next year.

The midsole is the part of the shoe that provides cushioning and support to your foot.

So, what's the 3D printing advantage? New Balance says the technique takes customization to a whole new level. Customization along with newly developed material gives the midsole a "previously unavailable combination of strength and elasticity..."

The shoes are part of a collaboration with 3D Systems. New Balance is using their new powder material called Duraform Flex TPU. Selective laser sintering converts the powder into solid cross sections—one layer at a time.

The limited edition running shoe will launch in Boston next year—and then to select locations around the world, according to the company.

Those kicks will also be on display at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in January.
