(WXYZ) — A new law will crack down on porch pirates in Michigan.

Introduced by Sen. Jim Runestad, the new law will create state penalties for mail theft, giving more options for state prosecution.

It will go into effect on Monday, Dec. 16.

"The law will help provide peace of mind as the ability to prosecute and punish these thieves increases.”

Repeat offenders could be looking at five years of jail time along with a $1,000 fine.

Sen. Runestad reminded residents to safeguard against mail theft and to have a plan in place to check mailboxes regularly.
