YPSILANTI, Mich. (WXYZ) — New video is showing exactly want happened before, during and after the moment Nathan Phillips started drumming for a group of teenagers at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
A group of five men, who identify themselves as "Hebrew Israelites," taunted Native Americans at Friday’s Indigenous Peoples March.
“'Indian' means savage, brother. I don’t know where you got them from. Look it up, brother,” one of the men said to Native Americans.
They then turned their attention to a group of teens from a Kentucky high school, who were there for a pro-life march. Some of the teens were sporting "Make America Great Again” hats.
“A bunch of incest babies, a bunch of babies made out of incest. This is what Make America Great looks like,” they shout at the teens, who then begin to chant toward the Native Americans.
“We surrounded and they won’t do a damn thing, look at this,” one of the teens says into the camera.
The teens continue to chant, and that is when Phillips begins to beat his drum.
Phillips made the news back in 2015 when he said students from Eastern Michigan University attacked his race.
Holly Birb, who is a friend of Phillips, attended the march but was not there when the incident happened. She says the song Phillips was playing was one of love.
“I know his purpose was to try and sort of dispel the anger that was happening, and he was doing that in our way and his way, which is drum and to sing a song. Really, (he) was wishing good on everyone,” Birb said.
