DETROIT (WXYZ) — An investigation is underway after an alleged noose was found hanging from the lobby ceiling Saturday night.
A source in the department alleges that a contractor who was doing the work at the Detroit Police Department's 11th Precinct is believed to have hung the noose.
The "noose" was found Saturday night at around 10:00 p.m. The lobby was not in use because contractors are working on the ceiling. Because of this, panels in the drop ceiling have been removed.
7 Action News has been told that officers believe the contract worker put it there after another contract worker was told not to return to the precinct following an incident a few weeks ago where an African American officer's vehicle was keyed. The contract worker in that incident was reassigned after a source tells 7 Action News surveillance video from a nearby liquor store was used to identify them in the keying incident.
The source tells officials originally believed another officer was behind the keying and the department came down hard on officers as a result. However, the surveillance video was then discovered. It was at that point the contractor was reassigned.
7 Action News is being told a warrant requested was never submitted for the contractor in the keying incident. We are told that officers believe if an officer had been involved, or if the vehicle in question was a city vehicle, a warrant request would have been submitted.
An investigation is underway, and top brass in the police department believe a loop used in the construction process and not a "noose." However, they are taking the allegations seriously.
