(WXYZ) — Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner announced he is running for Oakland County Executive on Tuesday morning.
Meisner is in the middle of his third four-year term as county treasurer, and said that he wants to lead the county down a path that "builds on our strength, while adding more equity, equality and opportunity, countywide."
Prior to being elected to the position in 2008, Meisner was a state representative for Ferndale, Oak Park, Hazel Park, Pleasant Ridge, Berkley and Huntington Woods.
Current Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson responded to the news by saying, "It’s obvious Andy wasn’t paying attention during my political lecture on peaking too soon.”
Meisner is focusing on the "Equity Agenda for Oakland County" which includes The Oakland County Promise to provie countywide access to college, community college and technical school debt free, universal healthcare for the 71,000 uninsured people in the county and ending childhood hunger and homelessness by 2025.
“As Treasurer, I won’t back down from any fight to protect taxpayers or our AAA bond rating," Meisner said in a statement. As Executive, I will never back down from any fight to protect Oakland County, our values and our future. Oakland County: Our future is now."
