Detroit police were on the scene of an officer-involved shooting on the city's east side this morning.

Police say one man was shot by officers during an incident at Jefferson and Chene.

Police Chief James Craig said officers were originally called to the scene around 11 a.m. after reports that a man -- who was possibly suffering from mental health issues -- was carrying a gun. When they arrived, the man then reportedly ran into traffic and was hit by a vehicle before opening fire on police.

That's when, Chief Craig says, officers returned fire, striking the victim two or three times.

Chief Craig says no officers were injured in the shooting. The victim, reportedly in his early 30s, is currently in surgery at a nearby hospital.
