As far back as 1817, President Thomas Jefferson said:

“Knowledge is power…knowledge is safety…knowledge is happiness.”

With that thought in mind, we at WXYZ-TV Broadcast House have proudly continued a longstanding tradition.

For 39 straight years, Channel 7 has been honoring high school seniors as our Brightest & Bestscholars of metro Detroit!  Nearly 200 very talented young men and women along with their parents or guardians were invited here to be publicly recognized for their outstanding academic achievements.  It’s one of our favorite events of the year.

It gives us an opportunity to highlight the hardworking accomplishments of these students from very diverse backgrounds, schools and neighborhoods throughout Southeast Michigan.  Their dedication to studying and learning has finally paid off in a way that can never be taken away from them.  What they put in their heads has prepared them well for their next chapter in life.  They are the future leaders of this state and nation.

But what thrills us even more than their academic excellence is what many of them, along with their fellow classmates, had to overcome to obtain their high school diplomas.  Their individual stories of adversity and triumph against great odds is as different as their DNA.  But one common trait they all share is that they were determined to reach the finish line with great success!

We salute each one of the Detroit area high school graduates this year as well as the Brightest and Best Class of 2018.   Pursue your dreams with gusto and remember Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s advice:

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”

 Congratulations!
