(WXYZ) — We are less than two weeks away from Memorial Day weekend. It is a patriotic time to remember those who fought for our country.

It also gives family and friends a chance to reconnect and spend time together.

It’s not too late to make vacation plans for Memorial Day Weekend, whether you want to stay in Michigan or not.

David Fishman of Cadillac Travel Group in Southfield searched the best deals.

“If you hit the road in Michigan, there are tons of things to do,” he said.

A day trip to Frankenmuth is a great option because the Frankenmuth Dog Bowland the Balloons Over Bavarian Inn festival take place that weekend. Both are free, family events for dog lovers and those who like to see hot air balloons.

Heading Up North?

For couples, Mission Point on Mackinac Island is offering a two-night “Island Romance” package for $379 a person.

“Daily breakfast, bottle of wine, half day bike, wine and cheese amenity with it as well," he said. "Round trip tickets on the ferry because you have to get there.”

Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City is offering a 25 percent discount for summer vacations, if you book by Friday May 17. The prices might be higher Memorial Day Weekend, but you can still get the discount on it.

Blue Lake Resort near Ludington has a special for a two-bedroom lakefront cottage for four people, with a boat!

  • $90 for one night
  • $85 per night for a two-night stay
  • $75 per night for three-night stay

If you’re planning to drive out of state, go to:

  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Lexington, Kentucky

Those cities have good deals according to travel agent Sanya Weston of Premier Travel Service.

“A lot of hotel space still available and that brings deals,” she said.

Touristy cities, like Las Vegas and Orlando, are hot spots for Memorial Day Weekend.

Weston said, “There’s hotels where prices are 40% less than normal.”

Cities rich with patriotic pride are great options, like D.C. and Boston.

“Beautiful city for a vacation, a quick weekend get away,” she added.

If you are really adventurous and want to dust off your passport, head south.

“There’s no festivals going on in Mexico so you can still get some good rates and it’s not overly crowded.”

Weston said avoid New York City, Aruba, Jamaica and the Virgin Islands during Memorial Day Weekend due to festivals and other events.

Travel agents say it’s important to get insurance in case plans change or get canceled.
