(WXYZ) — The Fraser Department of Public Safety says one person was killed and two were injured in a stabbing in Fraser on Tuesday.

Police say officers responded to an assault in progress around 4:30 p.m. in the area of Garfield and Klein and found three people stabbed. The victims were reportedly transported to local hospitals, where one of them died from their injuries, according to police.

Fraser schools near the incident were temporarily put on lockdown, and the district canceled events.

The investigation is ongoing. Police say three people are in custody in relation to the deadly stabbing.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to families and all those affected by this tragedy,” the Fraser Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

A 13-year-old who spoke with 7 Action News with permission from her mother said she knew two of the people involved.

"It’s just scary to think that kids my age could…this could happen...." she said.

Paul Ban, who lives near Garfield Road, said he saw the teens hanging out prior to the incident and that they hangout all the time. This time things escalated.

“If we don’t stand up and do something together then nothings going to change. We’re going to get more and more of this kid stuff, and this kid stuff should not happen," he said.

Ban added, "One thing is they didn’t use a gun. Maybe they couldn’t get one. Maybe our gun laws work. I don’t know here.”

He's talking about society as a whole. Crimes like this are rare in Fraser. There was one murder here back in July. In the FBI crime stats from 2006 to 2019, not a single murder was reported.

The funeral for the deceased teen will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home at13650 East Fifteen Mile Sterling Heights, MI 48312. Visitations begin at 3 p.m. and the funeral begins at 6 p.m..
