Police investigating after man accidentally shoots himself on Lodge Freeway

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Michigan State Police are investigating an accidental shooting that occurred on the Lodge Freeway overnight Friday.

Police say two friends from Grand Rapids were traveling to Detroit to go to a restaurant. The 20-year-old owner of the car had a firearm in the trunk. After deciding to stop at a gas station, the owner/driver got the firearm from the trunk of the car.

The 19-year-old passenger was holding the firearm and accidentally fired off one round, hitting his own ankle, police say.

Accidental Shooting: On 2/26 at approximately 12 25 AM, MSP 911 was notified by Detroit Police that a driver had drove his friend to Providence Hospital after he shot himself somewhere along the Lodge.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two friends from Grand Rapids were traveling to Detroit to go to a restaurant. The owner of the car had a firearm in the trunk. Upon deciding to stop at a gas station, the owner/driver retrieved the firearm from the trunk of the car.

The passenger was holding the firearm and accidentally fired off one round hitting his own ankle. He was driven to the hospital by the driver and was treated and released for his injuries.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident.
