CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Clinton Township Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist that happened Wednesday.

On Jan. 15, a preliminary investigation revealed the 58-year-old bicyclist was riding in the roadway traveling from the west side of the road to the east.

At the same time, a 2012 Honda Insight was traveling northbound in the left through lane, where it struck the bicyclist, police say.

Both bicycle and rider were thrown and came to a stop in the roadway.

The Honda immediately stopped, and the driver helped the cyclist, according to police. Emergency services responded to the scene, and the bicyclist was taken to McLaren Macomb hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There were no independent witnesses to the crash, according to police.

Police say the driver of the Honda is not suspected of alcohol or drug use, but alcohol usage is suspected and may have been a factor with the bicyclist.

The deceased was later identified as Michael Patrick McGovern from Clinton Township. Initial reports indicated he was on his way to a local church when the crash occurred, police say.

The Clinton Township Police Department is continuing the investigation and asks any witnesses to the crash to contact the department at (586) 493-7931.
