DETROIT (WXYZ) — It's day two of a barricaded gunman situation with a homeowner in Detroit. Police say the suspect is delusional and that he did something similar in 2017.

Detroit police say they've had relatives try to talk the man out of the home.

For about 30 hours now, Detroit police and their partners in law enforcement have been trying to get a barricaded gunman out of his house on Pelkey Street, in the area of 7 Mile and Shoenherr on the city's east side.

It all started Tuesday morning when the man fired shots into a neighbor's house across the street.

"He just took to being fixated on them and decided he didn't like them and he was going to resort to violence," said Detroit Police Captain Darin Szilagy. "Which is the kind of situation we train for but never want to face."

Police say the man who has mental health issues is alone in his house and he's armed with semi-automatic handgun and a sawed off shotgun, and they say he could have more weapons.

"We're talking about possible long guns here that can travel a great distance so we're asking everyone to stay low," Szilgy said. "A couple block radius in every direction."

Police say the man has cameras all around his house and it appears he has some sort of protection against the chemical agents that they've used in hopes of getting him to surrender.

"This is very unusual for a suspect to withstand the amount of agent deployed," Szigly said. "Either he has a gas mask or has found a spot that has good ventilation that it's not effective. We're going to continue to ask the neighbors to shelter in place and we'll try to get resolved as quickly and safely as possible."
