(WXYZ) — A Michigan State trooper was taken to a local hospital early Saturday morning after his patrol car was hit by a suspected impaired driver on I-94.

Around 5:10 a.m., dispatchers was notified that a trooper's patrol car was hit, and the trooper had requested EMS, police say.

A preliminary investigation found the Metro South trooper was in his patrol car blocking the left lane of eastbound I-94 near Mt Elliott where a previous crash was being handled. While waiting for the scene to clean up, an alleged suspected impaired driver ran into the back of the patrol car.

The trooper was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital after mentioning soreness but "sustaining no apparent serious injuries," police say.

The driver was also taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for minor injuries. Police say the man will be processed and kept at a local correction center. I-94 was closed for about two hours to complete the investigation. The freeway is back open.
